- NEWKEY INTRODUCTION
-
- We believe that at $30.00, $50 - $100 below comparable commercial
- programs, Newkey is one of the great bargains on the market today.
- How many high quality, useful software programs that come with a
- printed manual can be purchased for $30? We hope that after you
- have had a chance to try out Newkey for yourself you agree and
- decide to become a reqistered user.
-
- PURPOSE
-
- The Newkey keyboard enhancer simplifies the entry of common
- keystroke sequences by allowing these sequences to be assigned to
- any key desired. Once assigned to a particular key, whenever that
- key is struck the predefined sequence of keystrokes will be returned
- in place of the struck key. For example, the alt c key might be
- defined as 'copy' and whenever alt c is struck the string 'copy'
- will be returned.
-
- Newkey allows customization of software packages, ready creation of
- boiler plate passages, keyboard redefinition and other useful
- purposes. Several sample key definition files are included with
- Newkey and will be described later.
-
- Newkey 4.0 provides many features including:
-
- - Ability to define almost any key
- - Variable length pauses during key translation
- - Fixed length pauses during key translation

- special hot key to enter, no wasted keystrokes.
- - Date/time macro
- function, define your own date & time templates and let Newkey
- fill them in for you
- - Fast key option allows fast cursor movement
- and key repetition

- TAKING A GUIDED TOUR OF NEWKEY
-
- The guided tour demonstrates many of Newkey 4.0's major features
- and uses Newkey macros extensively. To get started follow these
- steps:
-
- 1. Create a Newkey disk which has DOS on it (not absolutely
- necessary, but it may save disk swapping during the demo.)
-
- 2. Place the Newkey disk in the default drive.
-
- 3. Key 'demo' and hit enter. This will take you on a guided
- tour of Newkey. The tour requires 192K of memory.
-
- NOTE TO USERS OF IBM'S ENHANCED KEYBOARD
-
- Because Newkey works a little differently with the new "enhanced
- keyboard" it is necessary to reconfigure some of Newkey's hot
- keys. The batch file "enhanced" will do this for you and tell you
- which hot keys have been updated. This is necessary because the
- default hot keys will not work on the enhanced keyboard.
-
- The guided tour uses many of these hot keys and refers to them by
- their default values. You will have to recognize that the hot key
- defaults have changed. These changes are:
-
- old new Description
- ---- --- -----------
- ctrl/ alt/ Pop-up features
- ctrl3 alt[ Slow typing on request
- ctrl4 alt] Slow typing off request
- ctrlesc ctrl\ Cancel macro playback
- cutpaste altp Cut & paste playback
-
-
- NOTE TO USERS WITH AMBER OR SIMILAR MONITORS:
-
- The colors Newkey uses may cause the display of certain monitors
- to wash out, with the result that much, if not all, of the Newkey
- text will be unreadable. This may be fixed by turning on
- Newkey's black & white option.
-
- To turn on the black & white option, load Newkey and then type in
- the following command:
-
- newkeysp/b
-
- and press enter. A message will be displayed indicating that the
- black and white mode has been turned on.
-
- NOTE TO USERS OF EBL:
-
- EBL (version 2.03) will not function correctly if Newkey is
- loaded last, therefore be sure to load Newkey before EBL.

-
- THE USER-SUPPORTED CONCEPT
-
- User-supported Software
-
- User-supported software is an experiment in distributing
- computer programs based on these beliefs:
-
- 1. That the value and utility of software is best assessed by
- the user on his/her own system.
-
- 2. That the creation of personal computer software can and
- should be supported by the computing community.
-
- 3. That copying of programs should be encouraged, rather than
- restricted.
-
- Anyone may legally obtain an evaluation copy of the program from
- a friend or computer club. After you have had a chance to use
- and evaluate the program in your own environment, you are
- trusted to either forward a payment to FAB Software or to
- discontinue use of the program.
-
- Free distribution of software and voluntary payment for its use
- eliminates costs for advertising and copy protection schemes.
- Users obtain quality software at greatly reduced cost. They can
- try it out before buying, and do so at their own pace and in the
- comfort of their own home or office. The best programs will
- survive, based purely on their quality and usefulness.

- RESTRICTED PERMISSION TO COPY
-
- With the release of version 4.0 we are providing a special
- full-power evaluation copy of Newkey which may be copied subject
- to the restrictions listed below. The only difference between the
- evaluation version and the version available to registered users
- is a special "evaluation notice" screen that is displayed when
- Newkey or Newkeysp is first started up.
-
- What May be Copied
-
- All files on the Newkey disk may be copied except for the regular
- versions of "NEWKEY.EXE", "NEWKEYSP.EXE", and "NEWKEYSM.EXE" which
- are reserved for registered users. These versions may only be
- used by our registered users and may not be copied or shared. If
- you are evaluating Newkey then these versions should not be on
- your disk.
-
- If an "evaluation notice" screen is displayed and you have to
- press a key to continue when you first use these programs, then
- you are using the shareware versions.
-
- Rules For Copying Evaluation Version
-
- Individuals are granted permission to freely copy the Newkey disk
- for their own evaluation or for others to evaluate, so long as no
- price or other consideration is charged.
-
- Computer clubs and other non-profit organizations are granted
- permission to freely copy the Newkey disk and share it with their
- members for the purposes of evaluation, so long as:
-
- 1. No price or other consideration is charged. However, a
- distribution cost may be charged for the cost of the diskette, so
- long as it is not more than US $10 total. This includes shipping,
- handling, and all other charges.
-
- 2. Club members who receive the programs are informed in writing
- of the user-supported concept and encouraged to support it with
- their payments.
-
- 3. The programs and documentation are not modified in any way and
- are distributed together.
-
- 4. The Newkey disk may not be packaged together with any other
- programs or materials. It may not be bundled and sold as part of
- some other more inclusive package.
-
- 5. The programs may not be "rented" to others.
-
- 6. The printed manual is not copied or reproduced in any way.
-
- Companies, schools, universities, government, and other
- organizations are granted permission to copy the Newkey programs
- for use on other computers and at other locations in the company,
- so long as:
-
-
-
- Page 6
-
-
- 1. The full registration fee of $30 has been paid for each and
- every system on which the program will be used.
-
- 2. The printed manual is not copied or reproduced in any way.
-
- Corporate licenses and volume discounts are available upon
- request.
-
- FILES ON THE NEWKEY DISK
